Nymphomaniac: Volume II (2013)

At the end of this, I wasn't sure if I like this movie(s), but on hindsight, I have to admit this is what happens when a director pushes the boundaries of what film is and injects it with his philosophy and forces the audience to face difficult questions about life. Am really glad I caught this 2-parter which also contains some really brave performances. I don't think everyone will be able to appreciate this film because it engages without pandering to mainstream tastes or happy endings (it is part of a depression trilogy after all). I'm also curious about what's contained in the 5 hour festival cut, though I'm not sure if I'd have the patience to sit through that. But then again, I was expecting something pretentious and boring with this one, but it turned out to be one of the more thought provoking films I've caught in a while.

Nymphomaniac: Volume I (2013)

Wasn't sure what to expect of this but at the end of Vol. 1, I was curious enough to want to know what happens next to the main character.

Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

Caught this on a plane and it looks like a pretty by the numbers tale with strong performances.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

A bit too long and by the numbers for my liking. Chris Evans looks hot though, but (for fans of these characters from Marvel's comics,) Agent 13 and Maria Hill are kind under-used.

The Lunchbox (2013)

Not bad. Nice!

Silent Witness - 全民目击 (2013)

One of the best films I've watched in a while.

IMHO, there's just so much done right with this riveting thriller - from great direction to editing, to the fantastic performances from Sun Honglei and Yu Na. On hindsight, some of the plot points do come across as almost impossible. And Aaron Kwok's performance is probably one of the film's weakest links. But these are just minute nitpicks.

Dot 2 Dot - 點對點 (2014)

Not 2 bad.
