Avatar (2009)

Fantastic visuals but the storyline was a bit too predictable for my liking.

Zombieland (2009)

Fun and refreshing, but not necessarily essential viewing.

Capitalism: A Love Story (2009)

As usual, watching a Moore documentary taught me something new. It's shocking how much an airline pilot earns in the United States. This is intelligent stuff.

The Informant! (2009)

Nice to see a comic approach to what may be standard plot for a thriller. Second part seems to drag a bit, but this is intelligent stuff and I enjoyed it.

The Song of Sparrows (2008)

An okay film. Content wise - I'm not really into this sort of moral parables. But I appreciated this more than lazy commercial flicks.

Paranormal Activity (2009)

I wasn't sure if I'd call this a movie, as it takes the form of video footage. But the story is pretty much standard, structured horror. I enjoyed watching this in the cinema with others. Pretty scary - it's effective in the way it uses audio and preys on that which the audience can't see.

Under The Sea (2009)

Was ok. Think this would look stunning in 3D, but the version I saw was just a normal IMAX version.

Julie & Julia (2009)

A bit too 'womanly' for my tastes.

Talentime (2009)

Been a while since a film made me laugh and cry this much. I thought Yasmin's previous film felt a bit amateurish for a tried filmmaker. But the same can't be said here. Talentine is possibly my favoritest film of the year - if not one of the top few.

Coraline (2009)

Watched the 3D version. Had strong expectations that were not met. Actually fell asleep at the front bits - dramatic tensions not that strong there. Felt this could be watched in 2D.

At the End of Daybreak (2009)

Watched this at the Tokyo International Film Festival. I fell asleep at the start. Maybe I was quite tired. Acting is generally strong throughout. Did not really take to the contents of the film, though have few complaints when it comes to the quality of the film.

Green Lantern: First Flight (2009)

Not bad. Sinestro was rightly casted here.

This Is England (2006)

Not bad.

Watchmen (2009)

Watched the director's cut on the small screen. Kinda boring. Fell asleep.

Darah (2009)

Just watched what I think is probably the bloodiest locally funded movie I've ever seen. Bears the advice - 'Best watched in cinema' because a responsive audience made the experience fun. Loved it when someone shouted 'Check! Check! Check!' after the evil one gets killed for the umpteen time and the hero leaves.

Not my type of film tho - brainless victims, torture, murder, gore, violence and lots and lots of blood. Even in edited form, the M18 rating looks like it was stretched to the fullest for this film.

The Uninvited (2009)

Ah.. the film this was based on made so much more sense now. The story here is interesting. The unfortunate bit may be that this felt like it belonged more on the small screen than it does in a cinema.

Moon (2009)

Interesting story. It did plod along, and I did fall asleep at the front.

9 (2009)

Satisfactory.

Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Hated it. Because I did not like the director. Not that I did not enjoy the show here and there.

The Cove (2009)

Essential viewing.

Blood Ties - 還魂 (2009)

Didn't really like the film personally. But as a Singapore movie - I thought it's headed in the right direction.

Food, Inc. (2008)

My first film @ GV Cinema Europa. A pretty comprehensive docu about what's wrong with the food industry in the US, and it offers a simple solution of what you can do. I'm not sure it's the ultimate solution tho. But I guess we gotta start somewhere.

Up (2009)

Not bad. Does stretch the imagination a bit tho. IMHO, I love the starting very much. Also, my first 3D film this century. Was the 3D necessary? Umm... not necessary after I've seen the film.

The Proposal (2009)

Not too bad.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009)

Am starting to dislike Hollywood flicks like these. The cast looks better on the poster than in the film.

Where Got Ghost? - 吓到笑 (2009)

Better than I expected (expectations weren't high). The film transfer really sucked.

Three Times Each for Short and Long Ways - 세번은 짧게 세번은 길게 (1981)

Kinda long and meandering. Not exactly my cup of tea. Though I thought the erotic did stand the test of time well.

Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl - 吸血少女対少女フランケン (2009)

I enjoyed this very much!

Whispering Stairs - 여고괴담 3: 여우계단 (2003)

Watched this without subs. Fell asleep midways. Interesting story. Wished I could've kept awake though. Too bad.

Wonder Woman (2009)

As expected, the story disappointed.

London to Brighton (2006)

This is proof that there are lots of cinematic gems out there that fail to get seen by more people. Acting in this film is top notched. Story is gripping. Has the ability to reach out to a larger audience. Shame, really.

Sincerely Yours - 歧路天堂 (2009)

Didn't really like this film much.

Ultimate Avengers 2 (2006)

Approached this DVD with trepidation because the previous chapter was not exactly my cup of tea. This was all right. It almost does not base itself on the comics so at least the story is newer. I still wished the Black Widow did not have that stereotypical Russian accent though.

Gran Torino (2008)

Fuck. The good news is that I really like the film. The story and characters were engaging and I found myself forgiving what I perceive were the film's flaws. Then I found out the version I watched was censored. Not that it was terribly jarring during the screening. But I should've known better. There goes my track record of giving censored films the wide berth....

Ultimate Avengers (2006)

Ho hum so-so. Having read the source material, this maturity and excitement-parred down direct-to-DVD version of the Ultimates was okay, though not essential viewing.

Batman: Gotham Knight (2008)

This is kind of a dull affair. Not that it's necessarily bad, the loose stories and Japanese animated style just isn't my cup of tea. Viewed on DVD.

Sunday, March 22, 2009

Superman: Doomsday (2007)

Not bad. Had low expectations but was sufficiently entertained. The extras on the DVD were a treat for the comic fan in me.

Friday, March 20, 2009

Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009)

Stupidly entertaining. :)

Sunday, March 15, 2009

Hansel & Gretel - 헨젤과 그레텔 (2007)

Viewed this on DVD. The young talents, the art direction and the cinematography stand out. This is a very pretty looking film. And I was satisfactorily entertained.

Suspect X - 容疑者Xの献身 (2008)

Yawn ~ I fell asleep midway. Didn't really care much for the protagonists. Film failed to engage me. A pity... as the plot is actually interesting.

Push (2009)

I had the misfortune of watching this in a theatre where the people behind and beside me were busy chatting away. After awhile, I gave up and moved to a quiet corner and started to be able to concentrate on the movie. It was so-so. Actors weren't that great. The concept isn't bad for entertainment's sake. But I thought the treatment could have been smarter.

Departures - おくりびと (2008)

Slow pace but nice. I like it.

Tuesday, March 3, 2009

Marley & Me (2008)

Kinda boring. Cuteness ain't always my cup of tea.

Sunday, March 1, 2009

Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure (2007)

The sound system wasn't the best. The eyes of the creatures seem a bit dead. Narration's simple. Otherwise, was an okay intro into the creatures of the deep in prehistoric times.

Let The Right One In (2008)

Don't like it. Characters and story did not engage me. The treatment and execution left me cold.

The Wrestler (2008)

very nice.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

Not bad. Danny Boyle proves that he's one of the most versatile and talented directors working today. The leads give this film its compelling emotional core. This may not be an instant classic. But it's done right for the most parts.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

For the first part, I was really bored. For the later half, I began to enjoy the romance angle. Not a film I'd recommend, because it's really long and I did not enjoy it that much overall. But the makeup is impressive.

Changeling (2008)

Misdirection in casting. A script that lacks focus. Somewhat not-so-strong direction. And unspectacular performances. IMHO, one of Clint Eastwood's weaker films. Pity, considering the historical context that this film based itself on comes across as being filled with lots of dramatic potential.
