The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (2015)

This is realllyyy dragggyyyyy.

Carol (2015)

Beautiful film. Well acted. But I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd like. Personal tastes aside, I also wonder if the poor sound-proofing in the cinema hall I watched in played a part as well.

Tangerine (2015)

Couldn't buy into a few plot points, directorial decisions or performances (however you look at it). But there were many moments which were especially potent. Love the poster.

The Kids - 小孩 (2015)

Nice!

Great performances complemented with heartfelt and gripping storytelling.

Banglasia (2015)

Not a very good film, IMHO.

On a totally separate note, I guess it must really suck to have your film banned after spending so much to make it.

The Laundryman - 青田街一號 (2015)

Don't really like.

Editing could be tighter and I didn't really buy into the story or characters.

Spectre (2015)

Is okay. A bit long though.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014)

Not too bad. May be a bit slow but Jennifer Lawrence is a commanding presence.

Saturday, November 7, 2015

Z Storm - Z風暴 (2014)

Not too bad. Louis Koo, Janelle Sing and Dada Chen all look good!

The Last Witch Hunter (2015)

Pacing felt a bit off for me at the beginning. Overall ok but it did keep giving me the feel that this may work better as a TV series then it does as a movie.

Baby Steps (2015)

Not bad.

IMHO, the best thing about this show is Gua Ah Leh's performance, easily one of the year's best. She brings this whole movie up one notch.

Would have love to see the story told more from the POV of the parent.

The two male leads weren't that strong together and their intimate scenes came across as awkward to me.

Love Chrisanne Eastwood's bit part in this. :)

Straight Outta Compton (2015)

Intense. More of education than entertainment for me.

Lost in Hong Kong - 港囧 (2015)

Bad movie + talking audience = horrible experience

Sunday, October 25, 2015

Bridge of Spies (2015)

Nice! Has the usual bits of US ra-ra but Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance are oh so good here.

"Would that help?" :)

Tuesday, October 20, 2015

The Martian (2015)

Don't really like. Was only an okay film + watched with some horrible audiences making soft noises during the screening.

Thursday, October 15, 2015

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015)

The critically acclaimed mature actors were good. The storyline not so. Dev Patel's performance was not helped by the shallow storyline, IMHO.

Love & Mercy (2015)

Was okay. Won't say I really dig it that much. Watched on plane.

Wednesday, October 14, 2015

The Social Network (2010)

Watched on plane. Gripping and tightly edited. Great performances.

Tuesday, October 13, 2015

The Walk (2015)

Needs to be watched on IMAX 3D, IMHO. :)

Sunday, October 11, 2015

Hocus Pocus (1993)

Was okay. Think I enjoyed it more on hindsight and when I watched it more than 2 decades ago.

Tuesday, September 29, 2015

Grandma (2015)

Nice! Weitz and Tomlin (and the rest of the cast, and crew) have made something of a gem out of this simple little film, IMHO.

Sunday, September 20, 2015

Everest (2015)

Watched in IMAX 3D - Nice! Not sure if this warrants a viewing in 3D but it certainly didn't hurt. But a big screen is probably the best way to catch this.

Woman in Gold (2015)

Watched on a plane where the image and sound weren't the best. This comes across as decent generic fare. Helen Mirren is oh so watchable.

Friday, September 18, 2015

Little Big Master - 五個小孩的校長 (2015)

Nice! (and the image and sound on the plane were good too!)

Sicario (2015)

This film paints the world to be a fuckin' dark place.

3688 - 想入飞飞 (2015)

I was hoping that this will turn out to be good but the story was pretty weak. IMHO, Royston has yet to prove to be a strong storyteller when it comes to the feature length format. The cast performances weren't strong enough to make an otherwise weak story (and script) captivating. The musical numbers didn't really help to energise the film enough. Which is a real shame, because the poster, the ideas and the trailer all look pretty good. But the actual product turned out to be a pretty dull affair.

Assassination (2015)

Nice!

The Assassin - 刺客聂隐娘 (2015)

IMHO - this is a pretty brave film. I began struggling to stay awake after the first 10 minutes (and I did succumb a few times along the way). I've never been more aware of cricket sounds or birds chirping, and it's been a while since I watched a film where the actors do a lot of internal emoting. You can't go wrong with Shu Qi. She's hot. Dialogue is sparse and the few fight scenes are brief and bear little resemblance to the types found in more commercially oriented films. I suspect a second viewing will probably be needed for me to appreciate this film better. That said, I won't recommend this to a mainstream audience.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015)

Enjoyed this loads. Made me LOL and cry. Thomas Mann stands out in this, IMHO.

Saturday, September 12, 2015

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015)

Was entertained. Love the chemistry between the two leads. Love Hugh Grant in this. Doesn't hurt that most of the characters are mostly competent and nicely realised by strong performers.

Inside Out (2015)

Didn't help that I was distracted by a crying baby at the start of the film. I basically wasn't paying attention to Lava, the short that preceded this.

That said, I found this rather plain. Didn't find the characters engaging either (in fact, found the lead character Joy very irritating). There is some cleverness to the whole setup, but not enough to balance out the things I didn't enjoy about this flick.

Amy (2015)

"If I could give it all back just to walk down the street with no hassle, I would."

I'm a little divided on this. A few times, I was bored because expectations weren't met (I've heard great things about this before watching). At times I was touched. Generally, I liked it. A well structured, in-depth presentation of a tragic figure whom I found likable.

Frank (2014)

Not my cup of tea. Didn't enjoy it.

Tuesday, August 25, 2015

7 Letters (2015)

Glad I caught it.

Favourites were the ones by Jack Neo, Kelvin Tong and Eric Khoo (altho IMHO, his could do with some edits for a tighter focus on the story).

K. Rajagopal's contribution was okay, but I didn't really dig the ones by Boo Junfeng, Tan Pin Pin and Royston Tan; which came across as being somewhat underwhelming.

Attack on Titan (2015)

Pacing was a bit off. Didn't really engage with the characters for the most part. Needs quite a bit of suspension of logic. But has its entertainment value. Not sure I really like.

To the Fore - 破风 (2015)

A thrilling flick left wanting due to broad strokes that don't provide much depth. Unbeatable was more satisfying, but then I'm nitpicking.

Thursday, August 13, 2015

Mr. Holmes (2015)

Not exactly a masterpiece, but it does boast some great performances and heartfelt moments. I did struggle to stay awake at times but I enjoyed this one for the most part.

Sunday, August 2, 2015

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)

I can't recall what the stories from the preceding films were about, or which chapter I might've skipped. But I don't recall this series having such a comic tone before. Regardless, enjoyed this one. Rebecca Ferguson kicked butt! (the others weren't too bad either)

The Bling Ring (2013)

I see this as more of art rather than entertainment. I also think that Katie Chang and Israel Broussard gave good performances.

Wednesday, July 15, 2015

Ant-Man (2015)

Not too bad.

Saturday, July 11, 2015

Ex Machina (2015)

Slow and steady. Appreciated it but dunno if I'll like it in the long run. (kinda like a female version of how Skynet begins :)

ABCD 2 (2015)

Enjoyed this eye candy popcorn dance feast.

Granted - the narrative did drag a bit. Most of the characters were likeable. I liked how the film wrapped. And I actually teared a bit during some parts.

Jurassic World (2015)

Watched in IMAX 3D. The IMAX part was great but didn't think it warranted the 3D treatment. The initial post-viewing impression was that this is for kids. Regardless, it's still entertaining enough for what it's worth.

Thursday, June 18, 2015

Wonder Mama - 媽咪俠 (2014)

Performance driven film. Not bad.

Wednesday, June 10, 2015

Man Up (2015)

A delightful surprise. Love the performances. Love the dialogues. Love the story (for the most part). Great soundtrack too!

Thursday, June 4, 2015

San Andreas (2015)

Generic. Don't like.

That and the can't keep their mouths zipped during a movie league make their appearance.

Red Amnesia - 闯入者 (2014)

Love this slow brew with a potent performance by Lu Zhong.
