A Werewolf Boy - 늑대소년; (2012)

The performance by the "werewolf" comes across to me to be more like a human trying to act non-human. That said, this film made me cry.

Predestination (2014)

A satisfying watch and probably one of the best films I watched this year.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)

Not too bad but generic. The volume in the hall felt a bit soft. The horrid audience who felt that he had a right to talk to his kid during the show reared his ugly head near where I was seated. On the plus side, a couple behind me stopped yakking after I told them nicely. Overall, ended up not enjoying the film fully due to the underwhelming volume in the cinema and the audience. But I've been through worst cinematic experiences.

Stand By Me Doraemon (2014)

Not too bad. Did tear a bit. But there were also parts that were slow. And the volume in the hall felt a bit soft too.

Dearest - 亲爱的 (2014)

An emotional gut wrencher. Not too bad.

A Fantastic Ghost Wedding - 非常婚事 (2014)

Not too bad. Sandra, the kid and the score were the standouts. But there were also some bits that didn't ring true.

Big Hero 6 (2014)

Not bad.

FEAST, the short that preceded this was just ok.

Interstellar (2014)

Watched on IMAX. Would recommend watching in this format. McConaughey and Chastain were both great. Visuals and sound design were great. Probably one of the strongest mainstream narrative films this year.

Viewing experience was however less than stellar (I got really worked up about a couple sitting beside me who talked during the film).

Lost in Paradise (2011)

Heavy melodrama with some strong performances, especially Hieu Hen, who plays a mentally handicapped man in the film.

Fury (2014)

Good film. I did struggle to stay awake near the beginning, but I did have a tiring week. Think that if the focus was less on Pitt's character, it may have been a stronger film. Pitt does gives a strong performance though, as does most of the rest of the cast.

John Wick (2014)

Heard good things about it before watching. Was prepared for it to be not really that good. As it turned out, it's not my cup of tea.

The Drop (2014)

Mr Tom Hardy gave a really good performance in this one. Enjoyed it muchly.

The Babadook (2014)

Not too bad.

IMHO, Essie Davis gives one of the year's best performance.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Don't really like.

Gone Girl (2014)

Don't really like.

Dracula Untold (2014)

Was dragged to watch this.

Film was in a big hall. Seats were great. No one around nearby. No audible yackers. But didn't like the film. Yawn...

The Rover (2014)

Watched on a plane and felt it would have looked great in a theatre. A grimly serious movie. Generally liked it.

McDull. Me & My Mum - 麥兜．我和我媽媽我和我媽媽 (2014)

Simple and bittersweet. Missed the front part of the prologue though. :(

Paradise in Service - 軍中樂園 (2014)

IMHO - Probably one of the better films this year for adults with some really good performances and a great score.

The Fault in Our Stars (2014)

Very teenagery. But the film did make me tear.

Finding Fanny (2014)

There were sprinkles of delight but these were few and far in between. Characters not engaging enough and the story kinda flat.

The Maze Runner (2014)

Not too bad.

The Boxtrolls (2014)

Fell asleep for a huge chunk of the movie. Love the set designs and all. Love the end credits sequence. But the story and characters were a bit too generic to be engaging, IMHO.  

The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014)

Helen Mirren and Om Puri are probably the two best things about this movie. The score is nice and the cinematography too but for the most part, the story involving the young leads don't really hook me much.

Magic in the Moonlight (2014)

Probably one of the best films I've watched this year. And then I went and shouted at a person behind me because she won't stop talking on her phone after I shushed her nicely first.

Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above - 看見台灣 (2013)

Glad I caught this. Not totally blown away though. But it is memorable and does a great job of presenting a clear and fresh visual perspective of a topic we hear a lot about.

Boyhood (2014)

Not too bad. But I can see why this won't be for everyone. Love the way the film ended. Very Before Midnight-ish. :)

Yasmine (2014)

Is ok.

Has the feel of a film made within a fledging Southeast Asian film industry. Lead actress is pretty and one of the supporting characters is quite likable too. Would like to see her paired with the male lead.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)

Enjoyed while watching for the most part.

Lucy (2014)

Disposable entertainment. Can see why some people were put off by the ending. Has hints of Akira, IMHO.

A Most Wanted Man (2014)

Great performances and a mostly tight direction. Probably one of the better films from 2014.

Minuscule: Valley of the Lost Ants (2013)

Interesting movie. Horrid viewing experience.

First, the kid behind me was more vocal than I like. I was in a great seat but I changed to the first row, where the kids behind me were worse. And I was sulking in misery and fell asleep a bit in the middle.

Not a bad flick. I just hated the whole viewing experience.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Rocket's probably the standout character in this pic (after Groot). The emotional tethers linked to Star Lord work pretty much well. Not a bad flick, but the bad guy's pretty generic, and I think I enjoyed Thor: The Dark World more by a bit.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

Apes hunt? I guess they do.

Not too bad. Was thinking this is the perfect film to showcase that we may not always agree on things, and sometimes certain decisions may cause matters to escalate into scenarios we may wish to avoid.

The Transcend - 超渡 (2014)

Not nice. One of the worst films I watched this year.

Chef (2014)

Lots to like about this film. Memorable scenes. Great performances all round (including the kid). Feels like a film that everyone involved in had fun doing.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014)

I couldn't really enjoy this. I let the chatty people and kids in the audience affect me. :(

UPDATE: On hindsight, this feels like something that'll look great on a huge screen.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Maleficent (2014)

My fav line in the film is "I do not like children." :)

IMHO - the film's not too bad, but there's wasted potential. If the love between Male and her ex was  developed, it would've made her pain even greater. Alas.

Anyway, it was a delight seeing Groot here, and it looks like Male's secret I.D. is Hawkgirl. Great SFX, and an opening that's reminiscent of the spirt of old Disney.

The Other Woman (2014)

Was okay. But also a bit too long. Leslie Mann's character is a little too irritating.  

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

Not too bad. Think comic fans will get more out of it. Felt a bit long (but I didn't fall asleep). Quicksilver was really cool and it's a shame he wasn't in more scenes. IMHO, his bit is as memorable as the Nightcrawler one in X2.

Bad Neighbours (2014)

The premise didn't excite me. Was going to give this a pass after watching the trailer. But generally positive reviews from others made me decide to check it out. Pacing was fine and there were a few nice surprises, including a likeable baby, strong comic talents, Batman, A&F, dildos and a crazy fight scene.

Godzilla (2014)

Struggled to stay awake and finally succumbed and missed the big battle at the end. Sigh...

Filial Party - 我是孝子 (2014)

Christopher Lee is not bad in this one. Story could have been much better. The other two contesting families feel undeveloped, unnecessary and unengaging. Ying Ying's character is a running gag, but I do like her and another of the female production crew characters with the fake Chinese accent.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

Was a bit long and I kinda struggled to stay awake at the beginning. The Parker parents bit seems like extra fat that could have been trimmed. Overall, was ok but not great. Could have done without watching this in IMAX 3D. Some of the images were blurry, or was it just me?

Oculus (2014)

Terrifying movie. Horrible audience.

Doomsday Party - 末日派對 (2013)

Not too bad. Works for the most part due to some strong performances and tight dramatic structure. IMHO, some of the action sequences were rather impressive considering this is a low budget film. Kay Tse looks hot.
